It’s that time of the year where many of us will be receiving lots of gifts. However, we don’t always get gifts that we like, and sometimes one just doesn’t know how to react if presented with a gift that does not tickle one's fancy!

So just in case you are one of those unfortunate ones, these tips will help you to react in the right way.

A "Thank You" goes a long way

Speaking to Mirror, etiquette expert Myka Meier says one should "always be gracious by smiling and saying 'thank you'," when receiving gifts. By you showing your appreciation and saying "thank you", next time you might get better gifts. Myka also advises that apart from saying "thank you" you should ensure that your body language is communicating the same message, and be careful of the words you use. Don’t chose words that will hurt the person who brought you the gift. If you are unsure of what to say, rather just say “thank you” or “how thoughtful of you”.

Accept it and sell it

There are many great websites where you can sell your unwanted goods. So if you know the person who got you the gift will be offended if you even hint at exchanging it, rather keep the gift and sell it in order to buy something else you will like.

Consider who the gift is from

Depending on the kind of relationship you have, some people might not necessarily be offended if you let them know you don’t like the gift. For instance, someone who stays in the same house as you may be more offended if they see you never using the gift. So rather than accepting the gift and leaving it in your house to collect dust, ask the giver in a polite way if you can exchange the gift for something you will definitely use.

Remember it's the thought that counts…

Although you may not necessarily like your gift, bear in mind that the person who got it for you most probably thought you would like it and it’s coming from a good place. So be appreciative.
