WATCH: Barney Simon gets COVID-19 jab

Barney joined the long list of elderly citizens who have been vaccinated against the deadly virus.

Since the beginning of phase 1b and 2 of vaccinations on Monday, over 140 000 people, including healthcare workers have been vaccinated.

A further 346 379 people have registered on the Electronic Vaccination Data System (EVDS) in Gauteng.

Things you need to know about the national COVID-19 vaccination programme

  1. The Government has procured sufficient vaccines for the national vaccination programme - and plans to vaccinate 41 million adults by the end of 2021.
  2. Vaccines will be administered in a phased manner according to a national prioritisation framework - healthcare workers, the elderly and those with comorbidities. 
  3. Phase one of the country's vaccine rollout programme began on 17 February.
  4. In phase two, which began on the 17th of May, around 16.5 million South Africans will be prioritised for vaccination based on age and other vulnerable sections of the population.
  5. Electronic registration for everyone who wishes to receive vaccines in South Africa opened on the 16th of April.
  6. Both the private and public sector will work together to make the process more efficient.
  7. Vaccines will be administered at public and private vaccination centres throughout the country throughout the rollout process
  8. Phase three will involve vaccinating the remaining adult population, even those under 60.
  9. South Africans have to register on the national Electronic Vaccination Data System in order to be vaccinated when they are eligible.
  10. In order to achieve population immunity by the end of 2021, it is necessary for 250 000 to 300 000 people to be vaccinated each day.
