'Winnie doesn't need defending'
Lindiwe Hani, the daughter of the slain South African
Communist Party general-secretary Chris Hani, has sprung to the defence of late
struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
She was speaking at the 25th commemoration of her father's murder at the Thomas Nkobi Memorial Park in Ekurhuleni on Tuesday.
"There have been so many things said about Mama Winnie this week that I have honestly found unpalatable. Whether in the media or by some leaders or even by those who feel they are defending her. uMama Winnie doesn't need defending. Her actions are the reason why I can stand here as an independent, strong, and unapologetic black woman," Hani said.
Hani also spoke about the immense love that her father and Winnie shared. She said Madikizela-Mandela's passing has been tough on the Hani family.
"This has been a difficult and extremely sad week for all of us but especially for the family of mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela."
Chris Hani was assassinated outside his home in Dawn Park home in Boksburg in 1993.
His killer, Janusz Walus, is still behind bars and was denied parole last year by the Department of Justice and Correctional Services.
