Pikitup continues to battle fire at Robinson landfill site
Updated | By Mapaballo Borotho
Pikitup's spokesperson Muzi Mkhwanazi confirmed on Thursday that the entity is still battling to extinguish a fire at its Robinson Deep landfill site near Turffontein.
The fire at Johannesburg's largest refuse dump broke out in the early hours of Tuesday.
The waste management entity said it is making use of heavy machinery, including two excavators, eight tipper trucks, and one articulated dumper truck, to cover the fire with soil.
Johannesburg emergency services were also on-site to assist in putting out the fire.
Mkhwanazi says even though the windy conditions have hampered their efforts to put out the blaze, a lot of progress has been made.
"We've put in a lot of topsoil and are making a lot of progress. We are anticipating that by the end of the week or Sunday, the fire will be completely extinguished.”
