The nominations for the 80 members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) were halted due to disagreements about the voting rules.

The electoral commission stated that delegates are not allowed to go the voting booth with a list of names.

Delegates disputed this saying they will not be able to remember all the 80 names agreed to at their respective branches.

ANC chairperson Baleka Mbete proceeded after a suggestion from ANC NEC member Naledi Pandor to nominate the top six and revisit the NEC nominations and rules at a later stage.

A total of 1469 branches nominated current Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa for the position of ANC president, while 1094 branches nominated his rival Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

For Deputy President of the ANC, David Mabuza, the current Premier of Mpumalanga, has been nominated by 1128 branches and Human Settlements minister, Lindiwe Sisulu by 619 branches. Outgoing treasurer General of the ANC, Zweli Mkhize, surprised the plenary by declining nomination.

There were no nominations from the floor, meaning the leadership battle will be a straight shootout between the slates put together by the Ramaphosa and Dlamini-Zuma camps.

Four thousand seven hundred and seventy six delegates will be voting and candidates need 2389 votes to come out victorious.

Results are set to be announced sometime on Monday.
