Safe cycling on busy roads

Cycling on busy roads can be quite dangerous, here are a few tips to keep you safe.

It’s not always possible to enjoy the safety of a cycle park or to leave the city behind for the heady freedom of off-road adventures, so it’s worthwhile following recommended safety tips to protect yourself on your city cycling and to ensure this is no less enjoyable.

Light up!

Wear something bright that does not blend into the urban landscape of concrete and tarmac. When cycling at dusk or in the evening, ensure you have adequate reflector strips visible on both your apparel and your bike to alert motorists travelling behind you and a light in front to ensure visibility to approaching motorists.

Signal your turns.

You are a lean, mean cycling machine, not a fresh-faced tourist learning how to navigate left-hand lanes for the first time. Mind-reading is not the average motorists forte, so leave hopeful anticipation out of the equation and be visibly apparent in your intentions.

Avoid distractions.

While it may provide some respite from a crazy day at the office, earphones mean you are not aware of sounds around you that may signal a compromise to your safety. Along the same lines, mobile phones are a bad idea for riders as well as drivers. Stay aware of vehicles around, behind and in front of you all the time.

Ride as if you were invisible.

Not in the super-hero, invincible sense. Rather assume that motorists are oblivious to your presence, so when changing lanes, turning or overtaking always ensure there is no danger from nearby cars that may not yet have seen you.

Tracker supports the safety of cyclists through TrackerActive, a personal active security device that allows loved ones to follow your ride and an emergency assist button that can facilitate emergency and medical assistance to your exact location. Connect with us here to find out more.
