Where else could you be having a political debate that suddenly turns into a rap battle?

Where else do you sing a gorgeous ballad before blowing out your last breath?

Where else is a gunshot replaced with a drum beat?

Can a singing plant from outer space steal your heart or can you encapsulate the civil rights movement (and a good dose of gender politics) in good old-fashioned rock ‘n roll?

The answers to the above are (in order of the questions): 'Hamilton', 'Les Misérables', 'Chicago', 'Little Shop of Horrors', and 'Hairspray'.

These are just a few of the shows featured in 'From Broadway to Bird Street/Van Broadway na Birdstraat', a spectacular new production from the award-winning team of theatre makers Hennie van Greunen and Pedro Kruger, and musical director Melissa van der Spuy.

What makes this different to any other Broadway-inspired show you’ve seen before is that the songs are all placed in context and the performers are in full costume and make-up, with astounding choreography and brilliant sound and lights in order to truly give you a slice of what you may see in one of the legendary Broadway theatres.

Five of our country’s best singers/musical gurus (Corlea Botha, Timothy Moloi, Lynelle Kenned, André Terblanché and Germandt Geldenhuys), combined with 22 phenomenal young Curro Create talents, revisit their favourite songs from the treasure chest of Broadway shows – from 'Cabaret' to 'Les Misérables', from 'Anything Goes' to 'Hamilton', 'Hairspray' and 'Little Shop of Horrors'.

Ten percent of every ticket sold will be donated to the Tribuo fund for artists and technical theatre workers who struggle to make ends meet in this difficult time.

And now you can see it from the first row!

Corlea Botha joined Breakfast with Martin Bester to get everyone excited and performed on Friday Live!
