Cilliers Brink could once again be the mayor of Tshwane
Breakfast with Martin Bester spoke to former executive mayor Cilliers Brink after being removed from his position following a successful motion of no confidence filed by the African National Congress (ANC) against him.
Former Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brink has officially been removed from his position as executive mayor during a council session at Tshwane House on Thursday, September 26.
This came after the African National Congress (ANC) filed a motion of no confidence against the 37-year-old politician after it was brought up by ActionsSA’s Herman Mashaba.
Speaking about his controversial removal, Brink said he was unaware of any gripes between him and ActionSA and that any disputes they had were already cleared.

He said that the biggest problem with his removal as mayor is that a "revolving door" of mayors is not good for Tshwane.

"A mayor needs time to bring positive change; if the mayor keeps changing, this can't happen."
Brink believes that ActionSA's Herman Mashaba was not happy with the 2024 general election result and, in turn, wanted to position themselves differently.
"What makes this outrageous is that there are no plans for the future or an alternative mayoral candidate."
Brink was removed from his position without any clear plans from the ANC and ActionSA.
Following the votes, Brink wasn't shocked by those who voted against him but was taken aback by the IFP’s decision to abstain from voting.
He said he was disappointed in his removal as he felt it was against the core of the GNU.

"It's disempowering to the voters, the people who put the GNU in place."
Brink urged residents not to lose hope and faith in the system and to not “opt out”. He added that the best thing voters and residents can do is to stay informed.
What is next?
Firstly, ActionSA thought they would get the mayoral position, but the ANC stopped this, saying that the mayor is not guaranteed to be from ActionSA.
"There were a lot of intentions, but once it all came together, it was actually just chaos," said Brink.
He added that there is a chance, although slim, that he could become mayor again.
"The ANC can choose to reverse the damage that has been done."
He said that the ANC and DA together hold the key to stability and responsible decision-making in South Africa and Gauteng.
