Coronavirus: Dexamethasone proves first life-saving drug

Dexamethasone proves to be life-saving during the time of Coronavirus

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize explained it in simple terms, "Dexamethasone is a well known and widely used steroid which has potent anti-inflammatory properties. It is used in allergic reactions, asthma and other conditions where the inflammatory component of the disease needs to be controlled for better outcomes". 

The drug has been used since the early 1960's to treat a range of conditions.

Breakfast with Martin Bester spoke to medical doctor, Dr. L, about the treatment and what doctors in South Africa have to say about the 'discovery'. 

The minister has also revealed that South Africa's coronavirus total stands at 76 334 cases on 17 June - 2 801 of which are new cases.
