Covid-19: Practice food safety at home
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
Professor Lucia Anelich joined Breakfast with Martin Bester on Tuesday morning for a chat about food and the coronavirus.
She is a specialist in microbiological food safety and former resident of the South African Association of Food Science and Technology.
According to Professor Anelich, there’s no evidence that Covid-19 can be transmitted by food, but it’s important to take every precaution and practice good hygiene.
Professor Anelich emphasised that it is good practice to wash your hands frequently with soap and water, before and after many activities, for at least 20 seconds.

“It’s important to understand that the virus is controllable, provided we all work together and take responsibility for our actions. Follow hygienic behaviour, social distancing, and arm yourself with the right information,” Anelich emphasises.
"So there’s no empirical proof that anyone has contracted the virus from the packaging. It’s not impossible, but the chances are slim," Anelich says.
