Eskom’s CEO explains the difference between load shedding and load reduction
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
CEO Andre de Ruyter answered a few listener questions on Breakfast with Martin Bester.

Eskom released an alert on 7 July 2020 confirming that the power generation system was severely constrained as two generation units tripped and requested the public to use electricity sparingly as the power generation system was under pressure.
The power utility confirmed that they lost a unit each at Medupi and at Tutuka power stations, totaling about 1 300MW.
This means constrained supply may persist through the weekend.

The power alert further reads, “Eskom teams are hard at work trying to return these units to service.”
“This may sound like semantics but it’s not,” explained Eskom’s CEO Andre de Ruyter regarding the difference between load shedding and load reduction.
De Ruyter also commented on whether South Africans should be prepared for load shedding during lockdown this winter on Breakfast with Martin Bester.
