Lindiwe Ndlovu brought up three children of her own, but as a mother with a passion for children, this was not enough. She started the Itumeleng Early Childhood Development Centre at her home in Mamelodi in 1996. Itumeleng means “being grateful for what you have" - in this case, be grateful for your children.

On her own steam over the past 27 years, Lindiwe built three classrooms and a kitchen. She also employs three teachers. Her school is currently a care and learning facility for 64 children from babies to pre-schoolers.

Itumeleng is in a low-income community, where most families cannot afford much, but they pay what and when they can (between R250 and R350 per month).

Lindiwe never turns a child away if the parents are unable to pay; she will never disadvantage a child. Her own children also help her with contributions towards the food for the children. For whatever else is needed, she makes a plan.

Lindiwe’s daughter, Caroline, wrote to Good Morning Angels to assist the school with a computer and internet, as Lindiwe uses a nearby internet café to send letters and communicate with the parents.

Caroline says they can also do with some extra toys and play sets for the children and some renovations like paint, to make the school more presentable and comfortable for the children. “My mom is all about service to the children and the community, and I would love for her to get a little support, to keep this passion growing."

ORIGINAL REQUEST:

Good Morning Angels,

Hope all is well.

My name is Caroline Jabulile Kheswa. I am writing this letter to you on behalf of a 57-year-old woman, Lindiwe Elizah Ndlovu, who is operating an Early Learning Center in Pretoria,  Mamelodi. She is a very determined, strong-willed and supportive woman to the community. She is also my mother.

She is running the school with four teachers and I have realised that she makes use of the internet cafe to print out her meeting letters to parents, and has been applying to retailers to assist with sponsorship in terms of renovating the crèche. She also need painting, toys, swings and getting a computer and a printer for business operations, but it has not been a success in getting assistance on sponsorship.

The school has three classrooms, for different age groups, from babies to pre-schoolers. She also has a kitchen as she cooks meals for all 64 children every day. Her school is a safe place for the children, whose parents work for low wages and cannot afford much.

Your kind assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Caroline Kheswa
