BACKGROUND: Graskop Animals In Need (GAIN) is a shelter and home to at least 50 abandoned and abused cats and dogs rescued in and around the Mpumalanga town. To assist with the prevalence of strays in the area, GAIN was registered as an NPO in 2016, with a mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home starving, abandoned or abused pets. The kennels and catteries were built with the help of members of the community in the garden of founder, Carla Gibson.

GAIN takes in and re-homes animals, but also runs a free sterilisation and feeding program to assist pet-owners in disadvantaged communities around Graskop.

On Sunday evening, Cyclone Eloise reached the area, bringing 400 mm of rain with it in 24 hours.

Carla had to bring all the animals into her home, as the kennels flooded.

She now needs to rebuild these and has reached out to the community for assistance as GAIN is donor funded and fundraising opportunities have all but dried up.

ORIGINAL REQUEST:

Hi everyone,

Graskop has been badly impacted by Cyclone Eloise and we have had over 400 mm of rain in the last 24 hours.

GAIN has suffered terrible damage and all out kennels and cations have flooded.

Our animals are now in our house and garage. It has been a nightmare as the rain has not stopped.
We are in dire need of cement, bricks, gravel, corrugated iron, guttering and much more material to fix the kennels.
We also got a kitten that was half drowned and was limp and lifeless when it was brought here yesterday.

I have managed to pull her through, but I think she has water in the lungs and may get pneumonia, so more vet bills coming our way.
