Immense losses for South Africa’s biggest casinos in 2020

Most of the casinos had to be closed in South Africa due to COVID-19 protocols.

Sun International is proud to offer unprecedented gaming in eight of the country’s nine provinces.

The group says the COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on the business, with group adjusted headline earnings down from R763-million to a loss of R1.1-billion.

With interprovincial borders now open, their hotels will begin to reopen. Their current health and safety protocols will remain in place, and all Sun International properties now bear the World Travel and Tourism Council’s (WTTC) safe stamp of approval, verifying that the COVID-19 health and safety protocols we have in place meet international benchmarks. 

According to Business Tech, income improved steadily until South Africa moved to an adjusted level 3 the imposition of the 8pm curfew and alcohol sales ban in mid-December 2020.

This led to a significant drop in activity and cancellation of bookings for the second half of December 2020 and into January 2021.
