Ian Boyd and Lana Doyle from Dullstroom

BACKGROUND: Ian Boyd and his fiancé, Lana Doyle, are beloved members of the Dullstroom community. Lana is a chef and Ian is a very accomplished designer. Lana describes him as remarkably intelligent, which is why his current state is very difficult for him to comprehend. On the morning of 21 February this year, Ian collapsed at home. With the help of members of their community, Lana rushed him to the nearest hospital in Belfast and then again to Emalahleni, as he needed a specialised test. He was again transferred, this time to Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria, where it was established that Ian had suffered a double stroke. After two weeks in hospital, he was sent home and so the process of recovery began. Neither Ian nor Lana can work currently and they do not have medical aid or income. Lana is Ian’s caretaker, but they still do not know how long or to which extent he will recover. Physically, Ian has recovered well but it is his brain that needs to heal. The community of Dullstroom has been supporting them as much as they can, but they reached out to Good Morning Angels to lend a helping hand.

BACKGROUND: Mbali Simons is a 26-year-old call center operator from Alexandra. She works to look after herself, but also her brother, who has special needs. Mbali’s mom died from AIDS when she was very young. Her brother was also infected. A few years ago, he suffered a stroke and is now partially disabled; he was not able to finish school and is not able to work. Recently, Vusi started suffering from epileptic fits and his health is deteriorating. Mbali has taken responsibility for looking after Vusi and his medical needs have put a huge strain on her small income. Alison Richardson, who has known Mbali since she was in school, reached out to Good Morning Angels for some assistance: “This little family is desperately in need of help and I know that your Good Morning Angels could make such a difference in the lives of these two young people.”

BACKGROUND: Look Forward Children’s Haven in South Hills Johannesburg is currently home to 20 children from vulnerable backgrounds. It has been a home for hundreds of abandoned, abused, neglected, and homeless children over the past 15 years. The Home was started by Sister Beatrice, who saw the plight of the poor in the community. Like in many cases, Look Forward has an abundance of love to give but relies on the community for donations to help the children in their care receive the best possible education, nutrition, medical assistance, and family life. They even take in children in the afternoons, who otherwise would not have after-school care.
