R607,000 raised by Jacaranda FM listeners to assist 20 patients at the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital

For Mandela Day 2021, Good Morning Angels set out to assist the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, in what has proven to be the most trying July in democratic South African history.

BACKGROUND: We set out to assist this hospital, dedicated to offer the best medical care to Southern Africa’s most vulnerable children, which is under extra pressure since the fire in April at the neighbouring Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital. In a few hours, some 100 very ill children were transferred from the fire damaged hospital to NMCH. All of these children were from families who cannot afford medical aid or private treatment and they had nowhere else to go.

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital is privately funded and has to raise funds to treat the state patients in its care. The cost of treatment per child is on average R30,000. True to Madiba’s dream, the hospital that bears his name does not turn any ill child away - and that’s why we set out the help and give hope in these desperate times.

We originally set out to raise assistance for at least 10 children - that’s R300 000 - but the Jacaranda FM listeners and Good Morning Angels family came through again! We closed the fundraiser after having raised R570 000 for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, however …

The Harcourts Property team decided to keep going. The staff of the Harcourts Rhino and Capital offices contributed and the Harcourts Foundation added R20,000 to raise R37,000.

This takes our final tally for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital to R 607,000 - enough to assist 20 children with their life saving procedures and double our original target.

Thank you to all the Angels for making Madiba’s magic live on!
