This South African city has the worst air quality in the world

On Wednesday, it was announced that one of South Africa’s cities has the worst air quality in the world.
On Wednesday morning, Johannesburg topped the IQAir index’s list for the worst air quality in the world.
The index presents a live ranking that regularly updates the air quality of different cities worldwide.

IQAir is informed by air quality monitors worldwide, including the South African Air Quality Information System.
Johannesburg shot up to the highest air quality index (AQI) measurement, which was 166 at 08:00.
The AQI measurements are:
- 0 to 50 - Good
- 51 to 100 - Moderate
- 101 to 150 - Unhealthy for sensitive groups
- 151 to 200 - Unhealthy
- 201 to 300 - Very unhealthy
- 301+ - Hazardous
The measurements are taken hourly and fluctuate accordingly

According to IQAir, when the AQI measures "unhealthy", it is recommended that a mask be worn outside, no outdoor exercise is performed, windows are closed, and an air purifier is used.
