Health Minister Zweli Mkhize says there has been a steady increase in the number of healthcare workers infected with Covid-19.
Speaking in Rustenburg on Wednesday, Mkhize said to date 511 health workers tested positive for coronavirus.
“A number of them, I think at the begin were largely community infections meaning they could have got it from some whereas not necessarily from work.”
The minister was speaking at the Sibanye-Stillwater mine in Rustenburg in North West on Wednesday morning.
Mkhize said 285 of the healthcare workers are in the private sector while 226 are in the public sector.
“We have 68 [infected] doctors, among those doctors, 26 are in the private sector and 42 public sectors. We have a total of 232 infected nurses, 156 are in the private sector, and 76 are in the public sector.”
Mkhize also revealed that 26 healthcare workers have been admitted to hospital while two, a doctor and a nurse, have died.
