GMA Extra: Checking in with Jayven and his leg-saving operation in Cape Town

Last week we were introduced to Carin and her son, Jayven. He was in need of a life saving operation in order to save his leg from cancer. With your help, we managed to raise the money they needed in order for doctors in Cape Town to conduct surgery on his leg.

Jayven Operation

BACKGROUND: Carin Janse van Rensburg and her family’s lives changed in a moment in August last year. Carin, her husband, Anton and their six children moved into a new home in Vereeniging just over a week before. She runs a pre-school and has four boys (aged 16, 9 and 3) and two girls of her own to organise. When she received a call from the school, that her 8-year old son had itchy eyes - Anton went to pick him up from school and take him home - in case he could infect other children. Ten minutes after Anton dropped his son off with two helpers at home - who were helping Carin unpack and move in - they got another call. This time, one of the helpers - distressed - said there were men breaking into the property - it was a house robbery at 10 in the morning. Anton  rushed home - and Carin followed in her own car.  She saw her husband, being gunned down by the robbers …

He died from his wounds in hospital that afternoon.

Five months later, on 6 January, Carin got more devastating news … Her 3-year old Jayven was diagnosed with cancer in his right leg - in his femur.  He is  currently receiving chemo and treatment, but she’s been advised that he may loose his leg. Their only hope is dr. Keith Hoskins in Cape Town. He can perform an operation, to save Jayven’s leg. But, they are in a race against time … and she has to raise R500 000,00 to give Jayven a fighting chance to keep his leg … before 26 May. She has so far managed to raise R180 000,00. Jayven's chemo therapy needs to carry on for another seven rounds. The medical aid covers some of the cost, but Carin has to do co-payments of about 50% and then there are the travel costs.
