BACKGROUND: “There are two S’es in life: you either succeed or you become a statistic.” That’s what motivates Hanover Park matriculant, 17-year-old Tashreeq Doovey. This hardworking student was on Breakfast with Martin Bester on Monday, after a video of Tashreeq being surprised by his class mates with a new phone and matric blazer did the rounds.

Tashreeq’s phone was stolen when he fainted on the way home from school. While his friends tried to revive him, a passer-by snatched the phone. Tashreeq was exhausted after school, after he had worked until late the Sunday evening. He woke up the following day to study, wrote the test, and had a full day of school, without having eaten. Tashreeq works at a catering company over weekends as the only breadwinner to his mother and three siblings. Despite taking responsibility for his family, his marks are excellent and he is an A-student.

Tashreeq wants to become a teacher and he has provisional acceptance at three universities. “I want to be a high school teacher, so I can help others reach their potential. Knowledge is power and if I can transfer that to someone else and help them pull themselves out of the dust, it would be amazing.”

The mother of one of this class mates, Roxanne Carter, has created a fundraising page to raise enough money to sustain Tashreeq’s family, so that he does not have to work and can focus on his matric finals. However, there is no plan yet for paying his studies next year...

Tashreeq is a 17-year-old matric learner at Windsor Secondary school. He is from Hanover Park in Cape Town. Not only is he a matric student but also the sole breadwinner to his mother and 3 younger siblings. A few days ago Tashreeq's classmates made his life a bit easier by all pitching in to get him a used cell phone, like the one he had he was robbed of whilst having a seizure on his way home. Due to him being the sole breadwinner, a matric jacket was the last thing on his list... His peers took care of that too.

The aim is to raise enough money to sustain the household without him having to work weekends until he has completed his final matric exam.

The impact of donations is that he won't have to work weekends to provide for his family and can only focus on his final few months of school.

He would love to study Education.

Funds raised (with the Backabuddy account) will be used to help cover the following:
Groceries
Electricity
Transport
Data for school projects
