Masekela family: Bra Hugh lived a beautiful life
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
The family of legendary jazz
musician Hugh Masekela has described his passing as both "a devastating
and joyous occasion".

The 78-year-old lost his ten year battle against prostate cancer on Tuesday.
His nephew, Mabusha Masekela, says Bra Hugh lived a beautiful life.
“We are saddened and devastated, but we are also happy and joyous because he lived a beautiful life and contributed so much to so many. While we are saddened, we are joyful that we’ve had time with him and that time was always marked with laughter.”
Mabusha, who is also in the music industry, says Bra Hugh played a very big role in his life.
“I was very close to my uncle and I lived with him on and off for many years. We went to many places. From Liberia, to Guinea, to Los Angeles. There was always moments and there was always something. If not for my uncle I probably wouldn’t be doing what I am doing. Through my uncle I met so many wonderful people who are now family."
He says Masekela died peacefully surrounded by family and friends.
