Activated charcoal, a fine black powder that’s produced when common charcoal is exposed to high heat, has become a popular ingredient in many beauty products.

From soaps and shampoos to moisturisers and masks, activated charcoal can be found in loads of beauty products.

Dr Josh Axe, a vlogger and certified doctor of natural medicine (DNM), says activated charcoal is able to adsorb toxins in the body.

In his 2015 YouTube video, he highlights the four benefits of activated charcoal:

1) Water Filtration - Used in water filtration systems

2) Cleansing the Body of Mold - Mold has a positive charge (Activated charcoal has a negative charge)

3) General Detoxification
