Updated | By ThriveIn
September 5 is World Samoosa Day, which means you have an excuse to indulge in the tasty triangular pastry.
Grandma Betty, aka Aya, is sharing a quick and easy recipe for samoosa pur (dough) that you can try at home.
The South Coast resident’s recipe couldn’t have come at a better time. Food lovers around the globe are celebrating World Samoosa Day today.
The savoury pastry, which is usually filled with curries such as mince, chicken and potato, is a popular dish in South Africa’s Indian and Cape Malay community.
But just about everyone in Mzansi is a samoosa fan.
Here’s how you can make samosa pur, which you can freeze and fry whenever your cravings take over.
Ingredients:
2 cups cake flour
Pinch of salt
Enough water to make the dough stiff – you can estimate
Method:
Combine the ingredients together and mix well until the dough is stiff
Divide the dough into six even balls
Flatten and roll each ball round using a rolling pin to form into large circles. You should have 6 circles at this point
Take one circle, use a bit of oil to brush on the top, and stack each circle one on top of the other
Cut the edges straight so you are left with a rectangle of dough
Oil an oven tray and place dough on tray. Brush the top of your dough with oil
Put into oven for 180 degrees for 15 minutes
Take out of oven, cut into long strips (about 30cm long) and peel each strip apart
Alternatively, you can place on an oiled microwavable plate in the microwave for 15 minutes.
You can store it in the freezer for up to a week until you use with your favourite filling.
