19-year-old Cape Town-based singer-songwriter, Cailyn Shelby unveils the music video for her upbeat debut pop single ‘My Four Friends’.

Filmed by Danie Nel and co-directed by Danie and Cailyn Shelby, the music video was filmed in Cailyn’s own bedroom. “We decided to shoot the video in my room, for a more personal feel to the video, and so that everyone who watches gets to be introduced to ‘My four friends’. The Storybook of the video, is simply a translation of what they see of my feelings, dreams and wishes,” explains Cailyn.

Filming in her bedroom was quite a surreal experience for Cailyn as well, as she recalls the shoot, saying “It was really weird!! I had these people that I had only just met really, in my room and touching all my stuff, sitting on my bed, just in my space. But it was really nice, because I feel so comfortable in my room, it was easy to just relax and be myself.”
Joining Cailyn in the video is co-star Matthew Koch, who plays the love interest she is “talking” to her walls about. For Cailyn working with him was so easygoing and a pleasure.

Looking at the theme of the music video versus the inspiration behind the song itself, Cailyn says “’My four friends’ was inspired by my bedroom walls. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I spent a lot of my time writing songs, therefore spent a lot of my time in my room. I think the message behind the song is just finding security in your own space and in your own company.”
