Mthembu says the current leadership is not fit to steer the party in the right direction.

"We cannot be the leadership that takes the ANC from these difficulties because we are so factionalised," he told Jacaranda FM News.

"If people do not have confidence in the ANC, we must create the conditions for other people to take us from this morass."

He says the party needs new leadership to take it to the 2019 national elections.

"We have messed up with our regions, our branches and our provinces."

Mthembu says after the 2016 elections, he together with other comrades in the NEC agreed to would take collective responsibility for the lack of support received at the polls.

"I also said, perhaps it is high time we take a fall as the NEC and resign."

Mthembu, adds finance minister Pravin Gordhan is being pursued for political expediency.

"That is wrong. It should not happen. We have said in the meetings of our movement that we will continue to support Gordhan."
