Mbete returns state capture report to Public Protector
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete has decided to return the final report given to her by outgoing Public Protector Thuli Madonsela on investigations into allegations of state capture by the wealthy Gupta family.
Madonsela requested Mbete to preserve the report until her successor assumes office.
This amid a court battle between Madonsela, President Jacob Zuma and Cooperative Governance Minister Des van Rooyen over the release of the report.
Mbete says she has an obligation to table all documents she receives, but she can't table this one.
"The Speaker has an obligation in terms of the Rules of the Assembly to table all documents received for the information of Members, in order to ensure that the business of the Assembly is conducted in an open and transparent manner. This report however cannot be handled in the same manner."
