SAPS investigating Wits shooting
The South African Police Service is investigating a shooting incident on Wits campus yesterday.
The investigation comes after two female students were shot in Braamfonteitn yesterday during the Fees Must Fall protest.
Leader of the Fees Must Fall movement and former SRC leader, Shaeera Kalla was taken to hospital yesterday after she was shot by police with rubber bullets.
Wits spokesperson Shirona Patel confirmed the incident, saying: "We know she was shot nine times by police [and] being treated by campus health and taken to hospital"
According to police spokesperson, Sally de Beer, the Acting National Police Commissioner, Khomotso Phahlane directed that the facts be established.
"The Acting National Commissioner wants the facts be established, including the circumstances that led to the incident as well as the extent of their injuries," de Beer told Jacaranda FM News.
She said that the matter will be referred to the Independent Investigative Directorate, IPID, for investigation and that any police officer found to have contravened the law will be dealt with accordingly.
"Members of the SAPS are once again called upon to exercise maximum restraint and to act within the confines of the law," de Beer said.
