Elections 2016 kick off with special voting

The 2016 Local Government Elections were expected to kick-off today with the special votes that will be cast on Monday and Tuesday. 

Special voting gets underway ahead of Wednesday's main poll

This comes as voters geared-up for official poll day on Wednesday when millions of eligible voters will cast their vote at voting stations nationwide.


Voters who registered for special votes would be able to make their mark form 8am on Monday.


The chief electoral officer of the IEC, Mosotho Moepya earlier confirmed that 719 225 applications were approved for the special votes.


Political parties concluded their final rallies with the three main events held by the DA, EFF and the ANC.

The DA ended their campaign in leader, Mmusi Maimane's home town of Dobsonville in Soweto on Saturday. 

The official opposition has its sights on winning all hotly contested metros including Joburg and Tshwane. 


Amid polls indicating a large undecided voter percentage the ANC wrapped up its elections campaign with a massive rally attracting hundreds of thousands of their supporters at 6 different stadiums in different provinces.

The main event was held in Johannesburg and Ellispark Stadium.  


EFF leader Julius Malema has urged voters to give the EFF a chance to change the lives of poor people.
