Mayoral candidates cast votes in Nelson Mandela Bay
Updated | By AlgoaFM
Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Danny Jordaan voted in the local government elections in Summerstrand this morning.
He said he was confident that he would be remaining on as the ANC-nominated mayor of the metro and that he would not be voted out of the position by the Democratic Alliance (DA).
Reacting to IPSOS-poll surveys, which put the DA ahead of the ANC in terms of support in the Metro, Jordaan said what really mattered at the end of the day was where people make their mark on the ballot paper.
"It just gives you an indication, it does not give you a scientific base to come to a conclusion. This is a scientific outcome, where people actually makes a cross and that is the only survey that counts," Jordaan said.
Meanwhile, DA Nelson Mandela Bay Mayoral Candidate Athol Trollip says the queues he witnessed at a voting station in Summerstrand this morning were reminiscent of the turnout seen at South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994.
He said there were also long snaking queues were he voted earlier today at the Westbourne Oval.
Trollip said he was encouraged by the huge voter turnout and that South Africans were clearly buying into this democracy and realising how powerful their vote is.
