Observer mission says elections transparent, free and credible
Updated | By Faith Daniels
An observer election mission has dubbed this year's local government elections transparent, free and credible, but it has highlighted several issues of concern, picked up by scrutinising yesterday's poll.
The Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA) briefed the media at the Independent Electoral Commission's (IEC) National Results Operation Centre in the west of Pretoria.
Some stations used one ballot box while others used two.
Scanners also didn't work at all stations and voting staff resorted to a manual process of identification.
There were also instances where a number of voters were turned away either because they presented themselves at the wrong voting station they were registered at, the scanners identified them as deceased or their names did not feature in the national population register.
The EISA has made several recommendations to, among others the IEC, address the ills.
