Our Voices: Alexandra

As part of the Our Voices series in the run-up to the Local Government Election on Wednesday, Slindelo Masikane visited Alexandra Township, Gauteng to speak to the residents.

Alexandra, better known as 'Alex', is a township located in the north of Johannesburg, near the upper-class suburb of Sandton.
The township was established in 1912 and was the only place where black people could buy free-hold land until Prime Minister J.B. Hertzog abolished it in the 1930's.

Fast forward to 2016, Alex is riddled with high levels of unemployment, poor access to basic services, informal housing and crime.
During the 2014 national elections the area was marred by violent protests over what residents deemed election irregularities
