Our Voices: Vuwani

As part of the Our Voices series in the run-up to the Local Government Elections on Wednesday, Maryke Vermaak visited Vuwani, Limpopo to speak to residents.
Vuwani is situated in the Vhembe District Municipality.
Residents here protested against the Municipal Demarcation Board's decision to incorporate them, along with Malamulele, in a new stand-alone municipality.
The area was identified as one of the possible hotspots in South Africa leading up to the elections after more than 20 schools were torched during violent protests earlier this year.
Police have kept a heavy presence in the area over the last few days to ensure voting goes ahead as planned.
A handful of people were seen making their way to stations scattered across the area, but like yesterday, Vuwani resembles a ghost town with almost no one on the streets and all shops closed.
