The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says only 17 voting stations were not opened by 11:30 am on Wednesday morning as South AFricans headed to the polls.
IEC CEO, SY Mamabolo, stresses that electoral officials are working with law enforcement to open the stations.
"To open these stations as soon as possible and as soon as it safe for voters and staff to make their way to the stations," says Mamabolo.
Mamabolo was speaking at the IEC's Result Operations Center (ROC) in Pretoria.
In the Northern Cape police have fired stun grenades at a group of roughly 120 protesters at the Holpan voting station in Barkly West.
This is according to the IEC's Provincial Manager, Elkin Tomkin, who told OFM News it was reported that the angry group tried to stop community members from voting by throwing rocks at them.
He adds one person was arrested, police spokesperson in the area, however, Mohale Ramatseba denied this, stating that the police have made no arrests.
IEC says the situation in Holpan is now under control and voting is proceeding.
Meanwhile, outside Mahikeng in the Dithakong Village, the situation is tense.
It is reported that residents have barricaded the controversial single tarred road in the area with burning tyres and rocks.
Mamabolo says Election Day started on a positive start at 7 am on Wednesday morning.
He adds reports reveal that by 11 am a large number of voters have cast their votes.
