Aussies want Steve Irwin's face on banknote
Updated | By MornéJK
A petition calling for Australia to put the late conservationist Steve Irwin's face on its currency has gathered almost 20,000 signatures, according to the BBC.

The report states that the petition to get the famous Crocodile Hunter, who died in 2006 when a stingray's tail stabbed him in the heart, calls on citizens to pay tribute to Irwin.
It is not clear whether the petition would have any impact but it calls for Australians to pay Irwin the ultimate tribute by getting his face on the currency.
One of the founders of the petition, Kyle Ryan told the BBC that they started the petition because the new generation barely knows who is on their currency anyway.

He told the BBC: "We believed that having a childhood icon and conservationist like Steve would be a great idea for his 10th anniversary."
Steve Irwin's face has already appeared on Australian currency once when a series of dollar coins were made to commemorate inspirational Australians, the BBC reported.
The chief executive of the Royal Australian Mint told the broadcaster that the petition "highlighted the passion throughout a sub-section of the Australian community to recognise Mr Irwin."
