Jockey S'Manga Khumalo became the first black jockey to win the prestigious Durban July at Greyville racecourse on Saturday.
It was 28-year-old's sixth group one success, with his biggest race victory previously being the Summer Cup at Turffontein.
Khumalo and the four-your-old gelding, Heavy Metal, flashed past the post to win the July Handicap over 2200 metres, giving owner Chris van Niekerk and his trainer Sean Tarry their second successive win in Africa's biggest race.
The Vodacom Durban July raceday fashion competitions produced a swish “Posh? Oh My Gosh!” spectacle that made it difficult for judges to shortlist their finalists in the four competitions, and settle on the eventual winners.
Finalists in the Kiss Most Striking Couple included Zinhle Mgaga and Goodman Ngcobo dressed by Bright Shadow in third place, Zodwa Manzini and Marvelous Mthembe wearing Mthhunzi Mthembu (MShade) designs as runners up, with the first prize going to Ben and Cornel du Preez in a classy ensemble by Monique Botha of Monique Talitha Couture.
The event also saw top designers showcasing their latest creations while celebrities flocked to the Durban raceway.
Here are some of the fashion higlights during the event.
