Johnny Depp almost axed as Jack Sparrow

Johnny Depp has revealed Disney executives almost fired him because they hated his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and were bemused by his suggestion the character was "gay".

The actor has revealed he was almost given the chop from the franchise whilst making the first movie because producers didn't like his flamboyant portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow - a character that has become one of his best loved and most recognisable - and he further confused them when he suggested Jack was "gay".

Speaking at the promotional event for his latest movie 'Black Mass' in Los Angeles, he said: "They wanted to fire me. It trickled back to me somehow that, 'Goddammit, Johnny Depp's ruining the film! What is that thing? Is it drunk, is it gay?' So I fully expected to be fired."

However, the handsome star managed to come up with the perfect excuse when he was summoned into the office.

He explained: "When they asked if it was gay, I said, 'Didn't you know all my characters are gay?'

"I was really expecting to be fired. But they wouldn't for some reason. They were actually going to subtitle my character - they couldn't understand Captain Jack."

Despite the producers initial worry, Johnny's portrayal of legendary pirate earned him an Oscar Award nomination.

Meanwhile, the 52-year-old actor recently admitted he was "absolutely horrible at auditioning" for roles during his younger years because he didn't realise the key to success.

He said: "I was a young idiot. I recognised that this [auditioning] process really had far less to do with performance and far less to do with connecting.

"So in my mind I always thought, to put it in a very nice way, this is horses**t. It's an uncomfortable place to be where you feel you must be 'on'."
