The One Direction singer has set his New Year's resolution to "grow up" and stop the bad habit but admits it will be tough.

He said: "I'm going to try and give up smoking, which is hard, but I do want to. I want to. It's about time. Need to grow up now."

Band mate Niall Horan has an equally health-driven goal for 2016 - to spend more time training in the gym.

He added to PEOPLE magazine: "I'm going to train, succeed in the gym this year. I always do it when I'm on tour and then when I get home, I'm c**p.

"Yeah, I would like to succeed properly and get the job done."

Meanwhile, the band are set to go on a hiatus next year and the 22-year-old singer previously revealed their break would be for at least two years.

He shared: "Obviously we're all going to take a break for a bit first and then consider where we are in the world. Then I just want to write songs. That's been the most fun process out of this, except for touring, the writing of the songs.

"We're going to come back, so there's something to write for as well, for us and for other people. We haven't really had time to write an album. Writing's not really a job, it's so much fun. We've always had to rush it, so it's going to be nice for the next two years - I'm going to write a few songs and see what happens."
