Miss SA: We need to celebrate women
Updated | By MornéJK
March 8 is being celebrated as International Women's day and current Miss South Africa, Ntandoyenkosi Kunene, says it is important to celebrate the strength, determination and beauty of all women.
"Today is all about women celebrating their power, their beauty and just being a women," she says.
South Africa recently ranked 15th out of 144 countries when it comes to closing the gender gap, jumping up two positions compared to the previous year.
According to the World Economic Forum's 2016 Global Gender Gap Index, South Africa ranks above both the UK as well as the United States.
Kunene says however that there is always work to be done in South Africa and globally.
She adds that the South African women who marched to the Union Buildings in August 1956, against pass laws, left a legacy of equality and empowerment.
"Even though the emancipation of women has happened it is our responsibility to continue the legacy by unlocking the potential of women in Africa."

The 24-year-old beauty reckons now is the time for a women president in South Africa and that we need a leader with compassion.
"As women we constantly put people first and we lead with compassion ensuring that other people reach their full potential," she says.
Kunene, who will be handing over her crown at the end of the month says it is important to inspire young women to reach their goals and dreams.
"Your dreams are valid and with hard work, you can get there. There are women who are paving the way for young women to see the possibility of life," she says.
Her message to women of South Africa: "May we have the same spirit that was demonstrated in 1956. The spirit of unity, the spirit of women fighting for a common cause, unity and compassion. Together we can do so much more," she says.
