At its Playstation Theatre on New York’s Times Square, the Japanese tech giant introduced the high-performance PS4 Pro and the new standard PS4, a slimmer, lighter and more energy efficient version.

The new standard Playstation will be available from September 15 priced at 299 dollars, and is aimed at attracting new users, Playstation boss Andrew House said.

The PS4 Pro, which boasts sharper graphics and faster processing, will hit the shops on November 10 priced at 399 dollars and targets more dedicated gamers.

Most games for the original PlayStation 4, 43 million of which have been sold since it was launched in November 2013, will be compatible with the new Pro version, Sony said.

Playstation sales have far exceeded those of Microsoft’s Xbox and Nintendo’s Wii U, but both competitors are also set to launch new high-performance consoles next year.

Piers Harding-Rolls, a games researcher at IHS Markit Technology, said the launch of the latest Playstation versions reflected a trend towards shorter product life cycles.

“Customers are always looking for regular hardware updates and the electronics companies want to sell more products,” he said.
