Homes collapse under heavy rain in KZN

At least four people have been confirmed dead following deadly floods in Kwa-Zulu Natal on Monday night.

Several houses collapsed in the Malvern area of Durban, due to the heavy rain and mudslides.


Rescue Care spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said in one incident, at least three homes were demolished by the water and mud.


"We were here since midnight yesterday (Monday) and we managed to rescue a female patient who had sustained serious injuries and was treated on scene, she was also trapped, she was freed and rushed to hospital.


"Unfortunately, we then recovered the bodies of four people, two being children and two being adults."

Jamieson says three more people are still missing and suspected to have also died.


"It is believed that three people are missing and presumed deceased under the rubble. That will be confirmed later today (Tuesday)," Jamieson said.


Operations were halted on Monday evening, due to the danger the flooding posed to rescuers.


"The storm hits quite large and for quite a long period. I can confirm that from midnight till this morning six different incidents have occurred.


"Multiple people have been injured and lost their homes."

Meanwhile , MEC of Cooperative and Traditional Affairs in KZN, Nomusa Dube-Ncube, says at least 23 people have so far  been confirmed dead since the first floods occured over the Easter weekend.


Dube-Ncube adds that 32 people have been injured.



"Over 2000 emergency calls have been recieved. Together with the traffic officers, Saps and other agencies are all on the ground and responding to the areas."
