The auditor-general says only one transaction valued at R2400 was red-flagged as fruitless expenditure in the 2018/19 audit outcome of the public protector’s office.

The auditor-general on Wednesday gave the institution a review on its 2018/19 audit outcome and financial performance.
The audit shows that the office achieved 72% of its performance targets in 2018/19, up from 50% in the 2017/18 year.
Busisiwe Mkhwebane has deemed the audit as a good review and has hailed her staff for a job well done.
Public protector's spokesperson Oupa Segalwe says not only did Mkhwebane's office receive an unqualified audit opinion, but it also reduced irregular expenditure by R16 million.
He adds that in total the public protector finalised almost 10 000 of the almost 14 000 complaints.
The Department of Home Affairs and municipalities continued to account for the bulk of the complaints.
