Seven-day average of Covid-19 cases on the rise

As the health department rolls out the Vooma vaccination weekend with the aim to vaccinate 500 000 people, the seven-day average number of new Covid-19 cases in South Africa has increased.

The National Institute For Communicable Diseases (NCID) reported 393 new confirmed cases on Friday, bringing the total number of cases to 2,925,371.

This represents a 1.3% positivity rate.

"The total number of cases today (n= 393) is higher than yesterday (n= 356) and higher than the average number of cases per day over the 7 preceding days (n= 283)," said the NICD in a statement.

More deaths have also been reported bringing the total number of deaths due to Covid-19 complications to date 89,469. 

Gauteng has the highest number of new cases at 44%, followed by the Northern Cape and Western Cape each accounting for 10% respectively, KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 8%; Mpumalanga accounted for 7%; Free State and Eastern Cape each accounted for 6% respectively; Limpopo accounted for 5%, and North West accounted for 4% of today’s new cases.

About 13 million South Africans have been vaccinated with at least 23.4 million doses administered as the race to vaccinate 70% of the adult population continues.
