10 suspected poachers nabbed
Updated | By Pieter van der Merwe
Ten suspected poachers have been arrested in and around the Kruger National Park.
South African National Parks (SANParks) says most of the suspects were arrested inside the park during anti-poaching operations. Police seized hunting rifles and rhino horns from the suspects, who were arrested in Pretoriuskop, Stolznek and Crocodile Bridge.
"At a later stage authorities also managed to arrest four suspects outside the park. The suspects were in possession of poaching equipment, ammunition and a heavy calibre rifle," SANParks says in a statement.
Two rhino horns were also seized during this operation.
Ranger shot and killed in KNP
Shortly after the anti-poaching operations were conducted, a ranger was shot and killed during what SANParks believes was an 'accidental shooting'.
SANParks says the incident occurred in the Lower Sabie area, where the victim was based.
"There was an investigation going on in Lower Sabie between the police and our own rangers," says SANParks spokesperson William Mabasa.
The ranger was airlifted following the incident, but died shortly after reaching the hospital.
No one has so far been arrested, but police have launched an investigation into the incident.
