Police have arrested 10 suspects following the deadly shootout between a group of men and the police near the Tshwane District Hospital, east of the city, on Wednesday.
Two suspects were shot and wounded while another was killed in the shootout.
The gun battle broke out as police were tracing a suspect they believe were involved in taxi violence.
Gauteng police spokesperson Mathapelo Peters says two vehicles and a Toyota Quantum were intercepted while driving out of the government mortuary on Dr Savage Road.
She added police intelligence revealed the suspect was in one of the vehicles.
"The suspects allegedly started shooting at the police who then returned fire. One suspect was fatally wounded, two injured and taken to hospital, and seven arrested.
"Three officers - two SAPS members and one Gauteng Traffic officer, were injured and rushed to hospital where they are in a stable condition.”
Police recovered three illegal firearms.
"An eleventh suspect was arrested after police searched and found on him a licenced firearm but with unlicenced ammunition belonging to a different calibre firearm," she says.
The firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing and all the suspects profiled to determine a possible link to other crimes.
