11 Alex residents evacuated following devastating floods

Flooding in parts of Alexandra, north of Johannesburg, has left eleven people stranded on Monday night.
This after two households were evacuated after severe thunderstorms left their homes filled with gushing water.
Parts of the province have seen consistent, sometimes heavy, rainfall for days on end.
Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi says there are some concerns about further flooding if the rain does not let up.
“We are concerned about the water levels in most of our streams throughout the city - areas like Diepsloot, Kya Sands and Kliptown," Mulaudzi said.
“Our residents in those areas are staying right on the flood line, next to the river streams and we are urging them to move to higher ground.”

Mulaudzi adds emergency teams are on standby.
“And now that young kids are at home, we are encouraging our residents to monitor them to stay away from playing next to the river stream so we can prevent drowning incidents.
“We’ve got out disaster management teams from all seven regions of the city and also our swift water risk unit is on high alert as is our rescue unit, and our 30 fire stations are fully operational.
“We should be able to respond to any emergencies which might occur throughout the City of Johannesburg during this holiday season.”
No injuries or fatalities have been reported.
