11-year-old shot with illegal gun

An illegal firearm was used when an 11-year-old boy was shot and killed by his friend.

Police completed the trace on the firearm, which allegedly went off while the two boys were playing.

Police spokesperson Mashudu Malelo told Jacaranda FM News that the weapon could have been smuggled into the country as none of the databases recognised the firearm's serial number.

Forensic investigators are now trying to determine whether the weapon had been used in other crimes.

The 10-year-old was undergoing psychiatric observation with social workers and psychologists set to determine the way forward.
