12 held for public violence
Updated | By Lonwabo Miso
Twelve people were arrested in Randfontein on the West Rand following violent protests on Wednesday, Gauteng police said.
"The 12 people have been arrested after they threw stones at passing vehicles on the R28 road. It is not clear why they are protesting," Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said.
The protesters also set a truck alight. The R28 had been cleared and re-opened to traffic. The group then placed rocks and burning tyres on the N14 towards Ventersdorp and the R41.
"They have blocked the N14. Traffic officials are directing traffic towards alternative routes as we speak," he said.
