15 to appear in court for Nelson Mandela funeral fraud

Fifteen suspects are expected to appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court on Friday in connection with the misappropriation of funds meant for former president Nelson Mandela’s memorial service.
The suspects were arrested by the Hawks on Friday morning.
They include Buffalo City employees, prominent politicians, businessmen and business entities.
Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale says the group will face charges of fraud and money laundering.

“The suspects will be answering to allegations related to the procurement of service providers for the transportation and booking of venues during the memorial service and funeral preparations of the late Nelson Mandela by the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality.
“This happened between the period of 2013 and 2014. The alleged fraudulent claims add up to a total of R10 million.”
