16 Days of Activism just an event: Sonke
Updated | By Lindiwe Mpanza
Advocacy group Sonke Gender Justice believes the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign has degenerated into a talk shop without any concrete action.
Sonke launched its #BeAccountable campaign on Monday to coincide with the start of the government’s 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign.
The #BeAccountable campaign aims to highlight the importance of a culture of accountability, something the organisation believes is sorely lacking in a society battling to address the scourge of violence against its women and children.
Khumalo says while they welcome President Cyril Ramaphosa's commitment to ending gender-based violence, they will closely watch the practical actions from the government.
"The test is in the implementation, we want to see practical action, whether the money that the president has identified is spent in the right key areas where there is a major need. Is it making the necessary difference? Are we getting the traction from government departments?”
