16 Days: Mental health of SA men needs attention, says Ramathuba

Limpopo Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba believes the mental health of the country’s men is an important aspect of the battle against gender-based violence.
Ramathuba was speaking during the launch of 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children in Polokwane on Friday.
"Let's also look at the mental health of our men because not all of us can take the stress the same,” she said.
"Some men, when they are divorced, in a relationship, they have got a cue to pick up. Some men, when you dump them, they can't take it. We are not condoning that, but we are saying let's deal with the real issue. Let's not sugarcoat (it).”
Ramathuba said the issue of healthcare workers and police officers who do not treat GBV cases with urgency remains a problem.
"We must respond and treat sexual abuse cases with urgency like we are treating a gunshot wound.
"So, to you doctors and nurses and you investigative officers, when there is a rape case, you must demand to see the prosecutor. There must be a debriefing even with the client. Sit together and prepare that case thoroughly because we need successful conviction," she added.
